The websites listed below will be of great use throughout the academic year when doing general concept practice. As I uncover others, I will update and add. Please feel free to email me any others that you may uncover and find beneficial that you would also like to see added. This will be a work in progress throughout the semester.
This is a great site that offers a wealth of information regarding anything English; just go to “English” and then type in what you are requesting help with (main idea, context clues, grammar, etc.). You can also access information about authors and their backgrounds. Following the short instructional video on your English topic of choice, a question and answer session will occur to assess your knowledge.
This is great website that allows the students to practice their figurative language skills. In progressing through a series of 15 or more questions, the students build towards the ultimate goal of “flinging the teacher” (a reward for successively outdoing their teacher).
The above figurative language site also offers a wealth of review games to assist you in becoming more skilled when it comes to applying figurative language to any content provided.
This is a fun place to visit to sharpen up one's grammar skills. It also provides fun links to many, other, core subject areas. While seemingly elementary by its very nature, any practice is good practice; thus, give it a try.
This site is a comprehensive figurative language site that allows the students to pick and choose from a variety of links that deal with figurative language. While not all links work, there are several that do; thus, this is a good review place for figurative language.
This is a great site that allows the students to go at their own pace through a series of practice methodologies such as flashcards, matching, or fill-in-the-blank testing to further practice their short story terminology. Audio is also available as a tool.
This is a great site for practicing the proper use of dependent and independent clauses. It will literally assist you in growing as a writer as you move into more complex and compound-complex sentences. 7. Skills Practice
This is another excellent site that allows the students to further practice necessary skills that will allow them to be better prepared for the end-of-the-year SOL tests. This site is especially strong in context clues practice.
This link provides a great way to practice, at one's own pace, for the end-of-the-year SOL test. Within the site, you can navigate through various practice applications of necessary skills as well as select a prior year's end-of-the-course SOL test to discern where your child needs further practice. This site is applicable to K-12.
This is a great web site that offers help with grammar, sentence, structure, and usage. To ensure that you have adequate practice in grammar, the site not only has separate exercises but it also offers self-paced units and diagnostic tests to examine your strengths and weaknesses.
This site speaks for itself and offers a wealth of information regarding the Standards of Learning (SOLs) that you will be exposed to across the course of the semester. As you navigate around, you will see that there are also practice tests there and sample writing prompts that can further assist you in preparing for the mid and end of the semester tests in Reading and Writing.
